Sanity’s Requiem

by Gelial on Dec.28, 2009, under Blurbs, Twilight Zone

Has the idea of what’s in the center of the universe ever crossed your mind? The possible existence of something that is beyond our mortal comprehension just… living there, ruling over it all. Possible not in this dimension… does the universe even have a center?

For those of you that don’t know me well, I’ve grown very fond over the last couple of years with the Cthulhu Mythos. In case that particular combination of words doesn’t strike a string in the memory lane of your minds, it’s one of the most known works from horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. His works are rather unique in it’s sense, and are sometimes given it’s own particular genre called “weird fiction”.

Lovecraft’s novels and works (that are quite vast) always circle around the same characters. He calls them “The Great Old Ones“.

“The Great Old Ones are ancient extraterrestrial beings of immense power, and most are also colossal in size. These entities seem to have a physical shape, but being cosmic lifeforms from beyond our space-time continuum means they are not based on matter in our definition of the concept, yet their forms are built on principles similar enough to those of true matter that they appear to be material in their nature. They are worshiped by deranged human cults, as well as by most of the non-human races of the mythos. The Great Old Ones are currently imprisoned—a few beneath the sea, some inside the Earth, and still others in distant planetary systems and beyond.”

Azatoth - Outer God

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

These cosmic deities, are to be in a death-like sleep. It’s believed that they’re intentionally dormant due to a current cosmic cycle in the universe. If this is true, these entities are trapped by powerful cosmic forces, and will remain in that state until “the stars are right”.

What causes my “Sanity’s Requiem” is not the idea that some alien forces live around us, just waiting for the right time to spring out of the box that kept them sleeping for aeons… but the idea that in the outskirts of our universe there’s a presence of unimaginable horror.

Nuclear Chaos

“Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.”

I guess that the whole concept of  “something” living in the center of a universe parallel to ours, encapsulated by infinite darkness, with only dim stars and galaxies that are light years away to light your vision… suspended eternally. To be surrounded by beings of inhuman horror, shapeless, amorphous, colossal beings… that only seem to dance around HIM to the tune of indescribable music coming from cursed flutes and never endless drumming. And everything that you see around you, is the endless pit of darkness that forms the universe, with nowhere to go. It would cause anybody to lose sanity.

Then again, what is sanity?

I wonder if at some point I will lose mine by continuing to give the amount of thought to this that I’m giving it, and if such thing ever does happen… is this the whole concept of Lovecraft’s work? To cause people to actually lose all sense of logic and straight thought? Did he actually created these monsters with the only intention of causing people madness? If so, he did a beautiful work.

Listen to the mad ones.
